Aneo Acquires 130 MW Bäckhammar Wind Farm in Sweden, Bolstering Nordic Renewable Energy Portfolio

Key Insights

  • Aneo, a Nordic renewable energy group, acquired the 130 MW Bäckhammar wind farm in southern Sweden from KGAL Investment Management on July 6, 2025.

  • The acquisition significantly strengthens Aneo's geographic diversification and overall renewable energy portfolio in the high-demand SE3 price area of Sweden.

  • The wind farm, operational since 2020 with 31 Vestas turbines, includes a long-term power purchase agreement ensuring stable output and revenue.

  • Aneo views this as a strategic, well-founded investment, reflecting strong confidence in the long-term positive outlook of the Nordic power market.

Aneo, the renewable energy group formed through a collaboration between TrønderEnergi and the investment fund HitecVision, has announced the acquisition of the Bäckhammar wind farm from KGAL Investment Management. The agreement, finalized on July 6, 2025, positions Aneo to significantly strengthen its presence and geographic diversification within the Nordic renewable energy market, specifically targeting the Kristinehamn municipality in southern Sweden (SE3).

The Bäckhammar wind farm, operational since 2020, comprises 31 Vestas turbines with a total installed capacity of 130 MW. A substantial portion of its output is secured through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a major international technology company, an arrangement that will continue under Aneo’s ownership. This PPA provides a stable revenue stream and de-risks a portion of the farm's generation.

"We have strong belief in the long-term development of the Nordic power market. With this acquisition, we are strengthening our position and taking another step toward building a solid and profitable renewable energy portfolio – while also improving our geographic balance," stated Gunnar Hovland, CEO of Aneo. The acquisition comes as Aneo implements internal efficiency measures, including cost reductions and workforce adjustments, yet it reflects the company’s firm conviction in a positive long-term market outlook.

Kari Skeidsvoll Moe, EVP Renewables at Aneo, emphasized the strategic fit of the asset. "Bäckhammar is a well-managed wind farm with solid technical standards. It’s a good acquisition at a competitive price, with potential for both operational optimization and future development. We know the technology and the region well, and the asset fits seamlessly into our existing portfolio in Sweden." The farm is expected to add approximately 355 GWh of annual production to Aneo’s portfolio.

This strategic investment significantly increases Aneo’s presence in southern Sweden, with nearly 30 percent of its total wind power production now located in SE3. This particular Swedish price area is characterized by the highest consumption and largest energy deficit in the country, making the additional generation capacity critically important for regional energy stability and supply. The acquisition underscores Aneo's commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint in key Nordic markets, contributing to the region's clean energy transition and addressing growing electricity demands.
