Amazon Web Services (AWS) has solidified its commitment to renewable energy by signing a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Malaysian clean energy provider Gentari Sdn Bhd for an 80MW wind energy project situated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This significant agreement, a direct outcome of a collaboration pact signed in 2023, underscores the growing trend of hyperscale cloud providers investing directly in clean energy infrastructure to power their operations. The project, slated to commence commercial operations by mid-2027, is projected to generate an estimated 300,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually, a substantial contribution towards decarbonizing the region's grid.

Gentari, a subsidiary of Petronas, stated that this PPA is a crucial step in advancing its vision of deploying clean energy solutions at scale, while directly supporting AWS’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This strategic partnership exemplifies how corporate energy procurement is driving the expansion of renewable energy capacity in key growth markets.

Jeff Johnson, AWS Asean managing director, emphasized the company's global leadership in corporate renewable energy procurement. “As the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, AWS continues to work towards our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer towards that,” Johnson stated. Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari, echoed this sentiment, adding, “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future.”

The 80MW project will integrate into the larger Karur Wind Development, a burgeoning renewable energy hub in Tamil Nadu. This region is already a focal point for wind energy development, hosting similar large-scale projects by prominent players such as Everrenew Energy and Tata Power, highlighting its strategic importance for India's energy transition.

India stands as one of the major data center markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with metropolitan hubs like Mumbai and Chennai evolving into critical digital infrastructure centers. The immense energy consumption associated with data centers, coupled with a heightened global consciousness surrounding sustainability, has propelled India to pursue aggressive renewable energy targets. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reports that the robust expansion of the wind industry has fostered a strong domestic ecosystem, encompassing project development, operational capabilities, and a substantial manufacturing base capable of producing approximately 18,000MW of wind turbines per annum. This has positioned India as the country with the fourth-highest wind installed capacity globally, making it an attractive destination for corporate renewable energy investments.
