British geoscience company Getech and energy transition firm Sound Energy have established HyMaroc Limited, a joint venture aimed at exploring Morocco's untapped natural hydrogen and helium reserves. The initiative follows a regional survey identifying promising geological formations, positioning Morocco as a potential leader in clean energy technologies. The venture focuses on 'white hydrogen,' a naturally occurring underground resource that could offer a low-cost, low-emission alternative to conventional hydrogen production methods.

Max Brouwers, Getech’s Commercial Director, highlighted the company’s proprietary exploration workflows, which leverage global geophysics data to model hydrogen and helium deposits. "Our expertise in petroleum industry techniques allows us to identify sources, migration paths, and reservoirs critical for commercial viability," Brouwers said. Morocco’s inland basins and renewable energy infrastructure further enhance its appeal for hydrogen development.

Helium, often co-located with hydrogen, adds significant commercial potential due to its applications in medical equipment, scientific research, and high-tech industries. Global helium shortages have intensified demand for new sources, making Morocco’s reserves particularly valuable. HyMaroc is now seeking exclusive exploration rights to assess the commercial viability of identified sites through targeted drilling campaigns.

The partnership underscores Morocco’s strategic role in the emerging hydrogen economy, leveraging its geographic position and existing energy infrastructure. If successful, the venture could position Morocco as a key player in the global transition to clean energy.
