California's power grid has achieved unprecedented clean energy milestones in 2025, operating on 100% clean electricity for a portion of the day on more than 90% of days this year. This significant development, driven by the state's aggressive investment in renewable resources, positions California as a global leader in grid decarbonization and energy transition.

Data compiled by the California Energy Commission reveals that the state's grid has run on 100% clean electricity for an average of seven hours daily in 2025. Cumulatively, this translates to 51.9 equivalent full days powered entirely by clean energy, representing nearly 30% of the year to date. This figure already surpasses the total for all of 2024 and marks a remarkable 750% increase in "clean energy days" since 2022, highlighting the rapid pace of the state's energy transformation.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the broader implications of this achievement, stating, "The fourth largest economy in the world is running on more clean energy than ever before. Clean energy met our grid’s total demand for some part of the day almost every day this year – the equivalent of 51 full days powered by 100% clean electricity." He further contrasted this progress with political rhetoric favoring fossil fuels, asserting that "the future is cheap, abundant clean energy."

This rapid acceleration is a direct result of California's record-breaking deployment of new clean energy resources, particularly battery storage. Over the past five years, the state has added more than 25,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation and storage capacity to its electric grid, an amount equivalent to roughly half of California's record peak demand in 2022. In 2024 alone, the state commissioned approximately 7,000 MW of new clean energy nameplate capacity, marking the largest single-year increase in state history and breaking records set in both 2022 and 2023.

The expansion of battery storage has been particularly dramatic. Since the beginning of the Newsom Administration, battery storage capacity has surged by 1,944%, now exceeding 15,000 MW. This substantial increase in dispatchable storage is critical for integrating intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind, enabling the grid to maintain stability and reliability even as clean energy penetration reaches unprecedented levels. California's sustained commitment to these investments underscores a strategic shift towards a resilient, decarbonized energy future.
