Acciona Energía, a global leader in renewable energy, is collaborating with DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, to advance sustainable battery energy storage solutions through the repurposing of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This initiative marks a significant step towards a circular economy in the energy sector, aligning with the stringent requirements of the EU Batteries Regulation (EU 2023/1542) which mandates greater sustainability and circularity in battery lifecycles.

The core of Acciona Energía’s project involves evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of giving a second life to batteries originally used in its fleet of Silence electric scooters. By repurposing these batteries for less power-intensive, stationary applications, the company aims to extend their operational lifespan, significantly reduce waste generation, and lower the overall carbon footprint associated with its extensive asset portfolio. This strategic move underscores a commitment to maximizing resource utilization and minimizing environmental impact across its operations.

In a pivotal development, Acciona Energía, in partnership with Beeplanet, a specialist integrator of second-life Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), has successfully developed a 1 MW prototype stationary storage unit. This innovative system directly utilizes these repurposed e-scooter batteries, demonstrating the tangible potential of circularity in large-scale energy infrastructure. DNV has been engaged to conduct a comprehensive and independent review of this prototype’s design and Acciona Energía’s broader second-life BESS strategy.

DNV’s critical role encompasses a meticulous assessment of the batteries’ first-life application, the entire repurposing process, and the rigorous testing methodologies employed.
