Glamox Secures Contract to Supply Marine Lighting for Hornsea 3, Set to Become World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm
Key Insights
Glamox has secured a significant contract to provide marine-certified LED lighting for the 197 turbine foundation platforms of Ørsted's Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.
Upon its 2027 completion, Hornsea 3, located 120 km off Norfolk, UK, will be the world’s largest single offshore wind farm, generating 2.9 GW of clean electricity.
The specialized marine lighting is critical for ensuring safe access and operational efficiency for maintenance teams working on the turbine foundations.
This project highlights Glamox's expanding role in the offshore wind sector, leveraging its long history in marine and offshore energy platform illumination.
Glamox, a global leader in specialized lighting solutions, has secured a pivotal contract to supply marine-certified LED luminaires for the foundation platforms of 197 wind turbines at Ørsted A/S's Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm. This landmark project, situated 120 kilometers off the coast of Norfolk, England, is poised to become the world's largest single offshore wind farm upon its full operational status in 2027, with a projected capacity of 2.9 GW, capable of powering over 3 million UK homes.
The contract, awarded by Scanel Green Energy, underscores the critical role of robust and reliable marine lighting in offshore energy infrastructure. Glamox will deliver 1,379 Glamox MIR G2 linear luminaires, specifically designed to illuminate the exterior areas of the turbine foundation platforms. This includes vital zones such as the landing areas, guardrails, crane access points, and the main access doors to the turbine interiors, all essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of maintenance and inspection teams. Sebastian Moroder Ottesen, Head of Projects at Scanel Green Energy, emphasized the established collaboration, stating, “At Scanel Green Energy, we value the strong and ongoing collaboration we’ve built over several projects with Glamox. With the Hornsea 3 project now underway, we look forward to continuing this professional collaboration.”
Hornsea 3's immense scale is a defining characteristic, with its generation capacity set to surpass that of Hornsea 1 and 2 combined. Each turbine will be mounted on a fixed XXL monopile foundation, eliminating the need for a transition piece, a design choice that streamlines construction. The foundations are currently under construction by Aarsleff BIZ Sp. z o.o. in Poland, where Scanel Green Energy will undertake the installation of the Glamox lighting systems.
Tommy Stranden, Chief Sales and Commercial Officer for Glamox’s Marine, Offshore & Wind division, highlighted the company's strategic pivot and expertise. “We are excited to light the way for Hornsea 3, which will play an important role in the energy security of the UK,” Stranden remarked. He further noted Glamox’s extensive experience, tracing its origins in lighting offshore energy platforms back to the 1970s, and its current leadership in supporting the transition to offshore wind. Glamox's portfolio extends to providing lighting solutions globally for turbines, substations, and the specialized vessels involved in the installation, commissioning, and servicing of wind farms, reinforcing the indispensable nature of proper illumination in these complex environments. This project reinforces the ongoing expansion of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea, a key region for European renewable energy targets.
