The XXL monopiles, manufactured by the Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables alliance in Fene, Spain, underscore a decade-long strategic partnership valued over €1 billion.
This delivery reinforces Iberdrola's commitment to local industry and contributes to its 1.1 GW Baltic Sea offshore wind hub, alongside the operational Wikinger and Baltic Eagle projects.
The Fene factory, a result of a €36 million investment, highlights advanced manufacturing capabilities for high-demand fixed offshore foundations, creating 300 jobs.
Iberdrola has announced the successful receipt of the final monopiles for its Windanker offshore wind farm, a critical development for the 315 MW project located in the German Baltic Sea. This delivery, completed by the Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables consortium, signifies a major step forward in the construction phase and underscores the robust supply chain supporting large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.
The monopiles, each measuring up to 84 meters in length, 10 meters in diameter, and weighing up to 2,100 tonnes, were fabricated at the specialized factory operated jointly by Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables in Fene, A Coruña, Spain. This marks the second significant monopile contract for Iberdrola with the Navantia-Windar alliance, extending a strategic collaboration that has generated over €1 billion in orders across various global projects over the past decade.
The completion of this delivery is integral to Iberdrola's ambitious Baltic Sea offshore wind hub, which is set to achieve an installed capacity exceeding 1,100 MW with a total investment of €3.5 billion. The hub already includes the operational 350 MW Wikinger and the recently commissioned 476 MW Baltic Eagle wind farms. Windanker, slated for operation in 2026, will integrate new-generation turbines with an approximate unit capacity of 15 MW, optimizing energy capture and project viability.
Ricardo Domínguez, President of Navantia, expressed gratitude for Iberdrola's continued trust, noting a decade of collaboration in offshore wind that has strengthened the national supply chain. Orlando Alonso, Executive President of Windar Renovables, emphasized the high quality and reliability of their products and processes, aiming to position their alliance at the forefront of European and international renewable energy developments. Álvaro Martínez, Director of Offshore Wind Power at Iberdrola, reiterated the company's commitment to the Spanish industrial fabric, highlighting long-term agreements that provide stability and international visibility for suppliers.
The Fene factory, purpose-built for XXL monopile foundations, represents a €36 million investment. This adaptation included facilities for bending thick sheet metal up to 12 meters in diameter, new painting booths, and expanded storage, alongside the integration of advanced manufacturing technology. This investment has directly created 300 jobs, reinforcing the economic benefits of offshore wind development within local economies.
