Indonesia Launches Net-Zero Modular Homes with Solar and Smart Tech to Address Housing Shortage
Key Insights
Indonesia's first net-zero modular home, Netro, integrates solar panels, energy-efficient materials, and smart technology to tackle the country's 3-million-home housing gap.
Developed by Saint-Gobain Indonesia, WEGE, and DEX, the prefabricated system reduces construction time by 60% and offers scalable designs for urban and rural markets.
The homes meet Green Building Council Indonesia's Greenship Net-Zero standards, featuring passive cooling, IoT-enabled energy monitoring, and alignment with green finance mechanisms.
Positioned as a replicable model, Netro aims to support Indonesia's housing and emissions reduction goals while leveraging modular construction for broader adoption.
Indonesia has introduced its first net-zero energy modular home, Netro, in a pilot project designed to address the nation's housing shortage and emissions targets. Developed by Saint-Gobain Indonesia in collaboration with PT Wijaya Karya Bangunan Gedung Tbk (WEGE) and PT Dex Solusi Transit (DEX), the prefabricated system combines industrialised construction with sustainable design, reducing build times by up to 60% compared to conventional methods. The homes, ranging from 33 to 129 square metres, are already showcased in Pulo Mas Jaya, with commercial developments planned for Bali.
Netro's modular construction enables rapid assembly with minimal waste, making it adaptable for urban, coastal, and rural markets. "This launch responds to housing demand across diverse regions," said Hadian Pramudita, President Director of WEGE. The homes are equipped with photovoltaic solar panels, insulated drywall, and high-albedo roofing to minimise heat gain. Passive cooling features, such as louvre windows and permeable walls, enhance energy efficiency.
A smart wall management system provides real-time data on energy use, air quality, and solar generation, supported by IoT connectivity for digital monitoring. The project aligns with Indonesia's Greenship Net-Zero certification standards, currently under review, and green finance mechanisms like KPR Hijau. "Meeting these criteria ensures eligibility for green financing," noted Iwan Prajitno, President Director of DEX.
Beyond a pilot, Netro is positioned as a scalable solution for developers and government-backed housing programs, demonstrating how modular construction can meet housing demand while advancing environmental goals.
