LONGi Completes 550 MW Module Supply for Southern Europe's Largest Single PV Project in Greek Lignite Mines
Key Insights
LONGi has completed the supply of 550 MW of PV modules for a major solar plant in Greece, located in Western Macedonia's former lignite mines.
This agreement represents Southern Europe's largest single project deal for PV modules, significantly boosting Greece's renewable energy capacity.
The project utilized LONGi's Hi-MO 7 modules, delivered between Q2 2024 and Q2 2025, supporting Greece's energy transition from fossil fuels.
The collaboration with PPC Renewables highlights the strategic repurposing of industrial sites for clean energy and strengthens LONGi's market position in Southern Europe.
LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, has announced the successful completion of its 550 MW module supply agreement for a photovoltaic (PV) plant project situated within the Western Macedonian lignite mines, owned by PPC Renewables (PPCR), Greece’s largest producer of electricity from renewable energy sources. This landmark achievement solidifies LONGi's expanding presence in the Greek market and represents Southern Europe's largest single project deal for PV modules to date, significantly contributing to the energy portfolios of both Greece and the broader Southern European region.
The agreement involved the procurement and delivery of LONGi’s high-performance Hi-MO 7 modules, with shipments meticulously executed between Q2 2024 and Q2 2025. The strategic location within former lignite mining areas underscores Greece's commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels, leveraging industrial rehabilitation for clean energy generation. This initiative aligns with Greece's ambitious National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which targets a substantial increase in renewable energy penetration and a phase-out of lignite power generation by 2028.
Leon Zhang, President of LONGi Europe, emphasized the company's dedication to client success, stating, "At LONGi, our commitment is to provide our customers with not only the most reliable and high-performing products on the market, but also consistent and dedicated support throughout every stage of project development. This 550MW project with PPC Renewables is testament to the power of true teamwork and our focus on our partners’ success. We pride ourselves on listening intently to all our customers’ requests and working hand-in-hand to achieve the best possible results." Athanasios Plainos, LONGi Sales Manager for Greece and Cyprus, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, adding, "We are delighted that PPC Renewables has selected LONGi for the procurement of modules, as the biggest national utility in Greece and Southeast Europe."
This project's substantial capacity addition is critical for Greece's grid stability and its objective to achieve energy independence. The Western Macedonia region, historically reliant on lignite, is now transforming into a hub for large-scale solar energy, attracting significant investment and fostering local economic development. The successful deployment of such a massive PV array demonstrates the technical feasibility and economic viability of repurposing industrial brownfield sites for renewable energy production, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across the European Union's Just Transition Mechanism. The project's integration into the national grid will enhance the overall renewable energy share, contributing to the EU's broader climate targets and reducing reliance on imported energy sources.
