Mack Trucks has donated a 2022 Mack LR Electric refuse chassis to Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California, marking a significant step in expanding the college’s electric vehicle (EV) training program into the heavy-duty sector. The donation aligns with the college’s mission to equip students with the skills needed for careers in sustainable transportation. The Mack LR Electric, the company’s first fully electric refuse model, operates at 400 to 600 volts and produces zero tailpipe emissions, offering students hands-on experience with emerging commercial EV technology.

Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America, emphasized the partnership’s role in fostering technical education. "This donation will help prepare the next generation of technicians for careers in sustainable transportation," Randall said. "It reflects Mack Trucks’ commitment to sustainability and workforce development."

The donated chassis will enable students to gain practical knowledge of high-voltage battery systems, which are increasingly prevalent in the commercial vehicle industry. Rio Hondo College previously collaborated with Volvo Group on the Volvo LIGHTS project, which showcased heavy-duty battery-electric vehicle technology. This new partnership with Mack Trucks further solidifies the college’s position as a leader in EV education.

The initiative comes as the demand for skilled technicians in the EV sector grows, driven by the rapid adoption of zero-emission vehicles in commercial fleets.
