The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has appointed Mr. Ito as Director-General of its Green Transformation (GX) Policy Group, effective July 2025. Mr. Ito brings extensive experience to his new position, having been deeply involved in the genesis and promotion of the GX concept. As Executive Assistant to Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, he played a crucial role in launching the GX initiative and driving energy policies through the newly established GX Implementation Council. This direct involvement from the highest levels of government provides him with a unique understanding of the strategic imperatives and political nuances guiding Japan's decarbonization efforts.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Ito served as Director-General of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Department, where he spearheaded policies related to renewable energy, hydrogen, and ammonia. This recent experience is critical, as Japan views hydrogen and ammonia as key components in its strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce carbon emissions across industrial and power generation sectors. His leadership in these areas is expected to ensure a robust framework for the development and deployment of these emerging clean fuels.

Mr. Ito's career at METI, which began in 1994 after graduating from the University of Tokyo, spans a broad range of critical policy areas. His international experience includes serving as Director of Industrial Research at JETRO New York, where he cultivated a network with key U.S. officials and reported on significant developments such as the U.S. withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Paris Agreement. He also monitored trends in economic security and supply chain resilience under the Biden Administration. Domestically, he managed personnel affairs for METI and contributed to policies concerning the automobile industry, AI, and semiconductors, demonstrating a versatile and comprehensive understanding of Japan's industrial and economic policy landscape. His academic background includes an LL.M. degree from Columbia Law School and membership in the New York State Bar Association, further solidifying his analytical and strategic capabilities.
