Osun State, Nigeria, has significantly advanced its climate leadership and renewable energy transition through a series of landmark initiatives successfully executed in June 2025. These strategic developments, coordinated by the Office of the Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy under Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration, reinforce Osun's position as a leading subnational actor in Nigeria's environmental transformation and clean energy agenda.
Early in June, Osun State hosted the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy for a high-level legislative roundtable. This engagement, following the National Legislative Conference on Renewable Energy, focused on localizing national clean energy policies. During the roundtable, Osun State officially launched four pivotal documents: the Osun State Climate Action Plan, a comprehensive Renewable Energy Policy Document, the Climate-Smart Investment Portfolio, and the Circular Economy Action Plan. These documents collectively serve as Osun's strategic roadmap for inclusive, climate-resilient development across all sectors.
Mid-month, Governor Adeleke received a Climate Leadership Award from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, acknowledging his administration's bold environmental policies and substantial contributions to subnational climate action in Nigeria. This recognition underscores the state's commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its governance framework.
Further demonstrating tangible progress, the state rolled out the "One Child, One Lamp" initiative on June 23, distributing IMOLE Solar Lanterns to students in rural secondary schools across all six geopolitical zones. This project aims to enhance academic performance by providing reliable lighting for studies and improving energy access for students preparing for the NECO examinations in underserved communities.
Concluding a productive month, Osun State's flagship Recycling Hub officially commenced operations on June 28. This critical infrastructure forms a cornerstone of Osun's innovative Waste-to-Wealth Strategy, designed to promote a circular economy, generate green jobs, and substantially reduce environmental waste across the state. The hub represents a significant step towards sustainable resource management and economic diversification.
Professor Chinwe Obuaku, Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy to the Governor, affirmed the administration's resolve, stating, "These achievements reflect our administration's unwavering commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and climate justice. We are building not just infrastructure, but a climate-conscious future for generations to come." Osun State continues to actively seek partnerships with federal stakeholders, development agencies, the private sector, and civil society to scale these interventions for broader impact.
