Powerhouse Energy Group PLC has announced a pivotal Letter of Intent (LoI) with B.S. Holdings Limited (BSH), designating Powerhouse as the exclusive supplier of 99.999% purity hydrogen for BSH's proposed Fuel Cell (Penta) H2P project in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. This strategic agreement marks a significant advancement for Powerhouse Energy's proprietary technology, which converts non-recyclable waste into low-carbon energy, addressing a crucial aspect of the burgeoning hydrogen economy.

The LoI, signed on July 3, 2025, is a foundational step for the Ballymena project, which is currently finalizing specific terms with key participants including the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), Ecotricity, SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland), and NIE Networks. The project's backing by DESNZ as a "first of a kind" (FOAK) development underscores its innovative nature and potential to serve as a blueprint for future hydrogen initiatives.

Paul Emmitt, Chief Executive of Powerhouse Energy, emphasized the strategic importance of the deal, stating, "This is a first of its kind agreement and we are delighted to have entered into the LoI with BSH for this potential DESNZ backed project. One of the key issues holding back the increased utilisation of hydrogen has been gaining appropriate offtake agreements. This LoI has the potential to deliver that for our Ballymena project." This statement highlights the critical role of secure hydrogen supply in de-risking and accelerating clean energy projects.

Under the terms of the LoI, Powerhouse Energy commits to supplying hydrogen at a price projected to be lower than both green hydrogen and the current UK Contracts for Difference (CFD) strike price. This competitive pricing, facilitated by the FOAK project status and DESNZ support, is crucial for the economic viability and scalability of hydrogen applications. Furthermore, Powerhouse will extend its support to BSH's other Penta (Combined Heat and Power) CHP projects requiring hydrogen within the Mid and East Antrim Council region, signaling a broader regional impact.

In a reciprocal arrangement, BSH will assist Powerhouse in securing additional commercial clients and provide priority access to future projects across Northern Ireland and the wider UK. Brian Hood, Chief Executive of BSH, underscored the fundamental necessity of fuel supply, remarking, "Without the fuel, the projects will not float, too many times we see great ideas and advances falter because of inadequacy of fuel and fuel at a sensible price." This collaboration not only secures a vital supply chain but also fosters market expansion for Powerhouse's innovative waste-to-hydrogen solution, contributing significantly to the UK's decarbonization efforts and the development of a robust hydrogen infrastructure.
