Repsol Proposes 650MW Wind Farm in Wyoming, Boosting Renewable Energy in the Region
Key Insights
Repsol plans to build a 650MW wind farm in Laramie County, Wyoming, with operations expected by 2029.
The $1.1 billion project will be developed in two phases, creating 131 construction jobs and 23 permanent positions.
The site was selected for its proximity to a 345kV transmission line and minimal environmental impact.
The project aims to diversify local economies, offering long-term tax revenue and lease payments to landowners.
Repsol, a Madrid-based global energy company, has unveiled plans for the Laramie Range Wind Project, a 650-megawatt (MW) wind farm in northwest Laramie County, Wyoming. The project, spanning 56,000 acres and featuring up to 170 turbines, is set to be operational by 2029. It will be developed in two phases: the first delivering 400 MW and the second adding 250 MW.
Permitting and investment details reveal a $1.1 billion commitment, with Repsol aiming to submit applications to Laramie County by June and the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality by October. The site’s selection was driven by its proximity to an existing 345kV transmission line and anticipated low environmental impact, making it an ideal location for large-scale renewable energy development.
The economic benefits are substantial. During construction, the project will employ an average of 131 workers, with 23 permanent full-time jobs created post-completion. Landowners will receive annual lease payments, and the county will benefit from long-term tax revenue. Charles Farthing, a local rancher, highlighted the project’s role in economic diversification, stating, "The cattle business is cyclical. This is a way to sustain the ranch for future generations."
The Laramie Range Wind Project aligns with Wyoming’s broader renewable energy goals, complementing existing initiatives like the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project. Its development underscores Repsol’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio while supporting local communities and infrastructure.
