Key Insights

  • SAIC Motor has commenced pre-sales for the new MG4 EV in China, starting at an highly competitive price point of approximately $10,000.

  • A new MG4 variant featuring a semi-solid-state battery is slated for a global launch next month, with deliveries projected to begin by the end of 2025.

  • The electric hatchback offers advanced features, including OPPO’s Smart Driving connectivity system and over-the-air updates, enhancing its technological appeal.

  • This strategic move positions SAIC to significantly impact the global EV market by democratizing advanced battery technology and affordable electric mobility.

SAIC Motor has initiated pre-sales for its new MG4 EV in China, setting an aggressive entry price of just 73,800 yuan, equivalent to approximately $10,000. This strategic pricing aims to significantly bolster the electric hatchback's market penetration, while the company simultaneously confirmed the imminent global launch of a new MG4 model powered by a semi-solid-state battery, slated for next month's unveiling. This dual-pronged approach underscores SAIC's ambition to lead in both affordability and technological innovation within the rapidly evolving global electric vehicle market.

The initial MG4 EV lineup, now available for pre-order, includes four distinct variants: Comfort, Ease, Freedom, and Smart. These models are equipped with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options, a 42.8 kWh pack providing a China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) range of 437 km (272 miles), and a larger 53.9 kWh option extending the CLTC range to 530 km (330 miles). Prices for these variants range up to 105,800 yuan ($15,000). The forthcoming semi-solid-state battery variant, whose pricing will be revealed in September, represents a significant technological leap, with deliveries anticipated to commence by the end of 2025. SAIC Motor asserts that its engineers have successfully "broken the material monopoly and overcome technical barriers" to enable the mass production of this advanced battery technology.

Measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the new MG4 EV is dimensionally competitive, slightly surpassing the BYD Dolphin. Despite its compact footprint, the vehicle integrates advanced digital features. SAIC has highlighted that the MG4 is the first model to incorporate OPPO’s Smart Driving connectivity system, facilitating seamless car-to-vehicle integration and advanced AI voice assistance. The interior boasts a prominent 15.6-inch floating entertainment screen, with the promise of future enhancements such as remote parking and safety upgrades delivered via over-the-air (OTA) updates.

This introduction of a semi-solid-state battery into a mass-produced EV positions the MG4 as one of the pioneering vehicles globally to adopt such advanced energy storage. This development is crucial for the broader EV industry, potentially paving the way for improved energy density, faster charging, and enhanced safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. SAIC Motor's recent sales performance indicates a robust trajectory, with over 2.05 million vehicles sold in the first half of 2025. Although this figure represents a 12% decrease year-over-year, the company reported a 22% increase in June sales compared to the previous year, marking its sixth consecutive month of sales growth, attributed to its "new three-driving force" strategy. The aggressive pricing and technological advancements of the MG4 EV are expected to further accelerate this positive sales momentum, particularly in international markets.
