Taiwan's Synera Awards Century Wind Power Contract for Formosa 4 Offshore Wind Farm Foundations

Key Insights

  • Synera Renewable Energy has awarded Century Wind Power a contract to supply 35 jacket foundations for the 495 MW Formosa 4 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

  • The agreement grants CWP full responsibility for the foundation package, aiming to support the project's critical grid connection target and enhance local content.

  • This collaboration signifies a substantial advancement for Taiwan's Phase 3 offshore wind sector, fostering domestic supply chain capabilities and industrial growth.

  • Formosa 4, SRE's third project in Taiwan, secured its 495 MW capacity in a 2022 auction and was the first to obtain its establishment permit in late 2024.

Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) has awarded a pivotal contract to Taiwan-based Century Wind Power (CWP) for the supply of 35 jacket foundations for the 495 MW Formosa 4 offshore wind farm. This strategic agreement, announced on July 3, 2025, underscores SRE's commitment to bolstering local content and advancing Taiwan's domestic offshore wind supply chain, particularly as the project targets its critical grid connection milestone.

Under the terms of the contract, CWP will be responsible for providing all 35 jacket foundations and will assume overall coordination of the entire foundation package. This comprehensive responsibility extends beyond mere component supply, aiming to deeply integrate local expertise into the project's execution and ensure seamless delivery in support of the grid connection schedule.

Lucas Lin, Chairperson at SRE, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, stating, "By entrusting a Taiwanese supplier with full-package responsibility for foundation supply, we are going well beyond meeting local content requirements. This meaningful collaboration represents a foundational step in SRE’s wind farm development, and we expect it to mark a substantial leap forward for Taiwan’s offshore wind sector in Phase 3." This statement highlights the long-term vision for cultivating a robust local industry.

Formosa 4 represents SRE's third offshore wind venture in Taiwan, strategically located off the coast of Miaoli County. The project was awarded 495 MW of development capacity in the Ministry of Economic Affairs' first auction round of Phase 3 Zonal Development in late 2022. Notably, it was the first project from that round to achieve its establishment permit in late 2024, following a comprehensive site characterization survey completed by Sulmara in July 2024.

This contract exemplifies Taiwan's ongoing efforts to localize its burgeoning offshore wind industry. By empowering domestic firms like CWP with full-package responsibilities, the nation aims to cultivate a robust local supply chain, reduce reliance on international imports, and create high-value jobs. This approach is crucial for the sustainable growth of Taiwan's renewable energy sector and serves as a model for other emerging offshore wind markets seeking to maximize local economic benefits. The successful execution of such contracts is vital for meeting Taiwan's ambitious renewable energy targets and ensuring energy security.
