Ventyr Selects DNV to Certify Norway’s First Bottom-Fixed Offshore Wind Farm, Sørlige Nordsjø II
Key Insights
Ventyr has contracted DNV to provide design certification for the turbines and offshore substation of Sørlige Nordsjø II, Norway's first bottom-fixed offshore wind farm.
The Sørlige Nordsjø II project, located in the southern North Sea, is a flagship development spanning approximately 520 square kilometers, 200 kilometers off Norway's southwest coast.
This partnership highlights the critical role of robust certification in ensuring the safety and sustainability of offshore wind infrastructure, setting high standards for future projects.
The project contributes significantly to the North Sea's projected offshore wind capacity of over 150 GW by mid-century, reinforcing the region's status as a global energy hub.
Ventyr, a leading offshore wind developer, has contracted DNV, the independent energy expert, to provide comprehensive design certification for the turbines and offshore substation of Sørlige Nordsjø II, Norway’s inaugural bottom-fixed offshore wind farm. This landmark agreement signifies a crucial step in the development of the project, located in the southern North Sea near the maritime border with Denmark.
The Sørlige Nordsjø II development area spans approximately 520 square kilometers, situated 200 kilometers off Norway’s southwest coast. This project is a cornerstone of Norway’s strategy to expand its renewable energy capacity and contribute to the broader European energy transition.
Wim Verrept, Project Director at Ventyr, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “Sørlige Nordsjø II marks a historic step forward for Norway’s offshore wind ambitions, and we are proud to partner with DNV to ensure the project meets the highest standards from the outset. Robust certification is essential to delivering safe and sustainable offshore wind infrastructure, and DNV’s experience and technical rigor make them a natural partner for this landmark development.”
DNV’s involvement underscores the critical need for third-party verification in complex offshore projects. Kim Sandgaard-Mørk, Executive Vice President for Renewables Certification at DNV, commented on the collaboration: “We are very pleased to deliver certification services for this project which represents a key milestone in Norway’s offshore renewables ambition. DNV has been closely following the development of offshore wind in Norway and is actively supporting Norwegian authorities and regulators with technical insight and guidance based on decades of experience in certifying offshore wind projects globally.”
The North Sea region is poised to become a global leader in offshore energy. DNV’s North Sea Outlook Report forecasts over 150 GW of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea by mid-century, solidifying its position as the world’s most important offshore energy hub. Projects such as Sørlige Nordsjø II exemplify how strategic industry collaboration, technical excellence, and stringent certification processes are collectively driving the next phase of the global energy transition.
