Karnataka Mandates Battery Storage for All Solar Plants to Boost Grid Stability
Key Insights
Karnataka Energy Minister K.J. George announced mandatory battery storage integration for all future solar power plants to ensure round-the-clock energy availability.
The directive includes a requirement for at least two hours of energy storage capacity, addressing grid stability and demand-side management challenges.
Key projects like the 2000 MW pumped storage facility at Sharavathi and a 2000 MW battery storage facility at Rapte are part of the state's storage roadmap.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized the national importance of energy storage, aligning with India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative for renewable energy utilization.
Karnataka Energy Minister K.J. George has mandated that all future solar power plants in the state must integrate battery storage systems, a move aimed at enhancing renewable energy reliability and grid stability. The announcement was made during the inauguration of a 5 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) by Pace Digitek’s Lineage Power at Bidadi. "Solar energy produced during the day needs to be stored for nighttime use. To make this possible, every solar power plant in the state will need to integrate battery storage systems capable of storing at least two hours of energy," George stated.
The directive underscores Karnataka’s commitment to addressing the intermittency of renewable energy sources, which currently contribute 65% of the state’s power generation. George highlighted the critical role of storage in ensuring grid stability and efficient demand-side management. He also noted the central government’s support for storage initiatives, praising private sector involvement in the sector.
Karnataka’s energy storage roadmap includes several high-capacity projects: a 2000 MW pumped storage facility at Sharavathi, 1500 MW at Varahi, 1000 MW at Pavagada, and a 2000 MW battery storage facility at Rapte. The Sharavathi project, already cleared by the Central Electricity Authority, will be developed between Talakalale in Shivamogga and the Gerusoppa reservoirs in Uttara Kannada.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, present at the event, emphasized the national significance of energy storage. "Battery storage is essential to the success of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The central government is prioritizing storage infrastructure to maximize the utilization of renewable energy," Joshi said. He lauded Karnataka’s leadership in renewable energy and encouraged entrepreneurs to invest in the burgeoning storage sector.
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including KREDL Chairman T.D. Rajegowda and Pace Digitek-Lineage Power CMD Venugopal Rao, signaling strong stakeholder support for the initiative.
